Symphony is Wi-Fi enabled and cloud-based so there’s no software to install, and it provides control over the entire geothermal system—not just the temperature as in other “smart thermostat” systems. WaterFurnace is leading the way and is the only geothermal manufacturer to offer an in-house developed comfort platform. That means it’s custom-tailored for the units you install and isn’t reliant on third party development or changes.

02/09/2015Geothermal Ground Loop
The most typical geothermal installation utilizes a closed loop system. In a closed loop system, a loop of piping is buried underground and filled with water or antifreeze that continuously circulates through the system. There are three major types of closed loop geothermal systems: horizontal loops, vertical loops and pond loops.

Lower total energy usage & lower “carbon footprint”

12/07/2014Eco-friendly gas station opens in Beaverton
A gas station is probably the last place one would think of as being eco-friendly but a new Beaverton Chevron station meets that description. There are 75 solar panels on its rooftop that the station's owner said can generate enough energy to power the entire service station, and more. Some of the excess power is sent back to the utility company, and some goes into an electric vehicle charging station, according to owner Bob Barman. The gas station offers electric vehicle drivers a free recharge. Since we generate more than we can use we're going to give it back to the consumer, Barman said. All the station's lights are LED, which cuts its energy use by some 70 percent. All of its coolers use geothermal technology, installed by Total Energy Concepts, Inc. 09/22/2014Brush Prairie, WA, Geothermal Ground Loop
Explanation of a geothermal ground loop - While outdoor air temperatures fluctuate with the changing seasons underground temperatures don’t change as dramatically. Four to six feet below ground, temperatures remain relatively constant year-round. A geothermal system, which typically consists of an indoor air handling unit and a buried system of pipes, called an earth loop and a ground loop. In winter, fluid circulating through the system’s earth/ground loop. The indoor unit compresses the heat to a higher temperature and distributes it throughout the your home or building, as if it were an air conditioner running in reverse. In summer, the geothermal HVAC system pulls heat from the building and carries it through the earth/ground loop where it deposits the heat into the cooler earth/aquifer.

Another geothermal project in Snohomish County. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Geothermal ground source heat pump systems are one of the most energy efficient, environmentally clean, and cost-effective space conditioning systems available. About 70 percent of the energy used by a geothermal heat pump system comes in the form of renewable energy from the ground. Geothermal heat pumps, as well as all other types of heat pumps, have efficiencies rated according to their coefficient of performance or COP. It's a scientific way of determining how much energy the system produces versus how much it uses. Most geothermal heat pump systems have COPs of 3-4.5, except for the Series 7 which has a 5.3 COP efficiency

11/15/2013Geothermal Radiant Heating

Modern central heating comes in two types--convection and hydronic. Convection heating uses the movement of air to heat space. The most common kind of convection heating is "forced air," using pipes to push heated air throughout the building. Hydronic (water) heat uses radiators, baseboards or radiant heat in floors or walls to put heat where it's needed. Given the proper heat producer and distribution materials, radiant heat can be more efficient than any other form of heating. Its main advantages are its uniform effect and comfort.

09/10/2012Does Geothermal Heating and Cooling Last
Geothermal heating and cooling systems, work and work and work.

Geothermal (also known as GeoExchange) heat pump systems are really solar energy at its best. The sun keeps the soil below the frost level (4-6 feet deep) around 65 degrees Fahrenheit year-round.. A system of loops are installed underground with minimal land disruption. Liquid circulates through the loops, absorbing the ground temperature, and passes through a geothermal heat pump that transfers the liquid temperature to the air. Because the system's fluid is already at 65 degrees, only a small amount of electricity is necessary to warm or cool indoor air a few more degrees to the desired temperature. A distribution system circulates the heated or cooled air or water.
08/21/2012Another Geothermal System, installation 1991
Geothermal systems represent a savings to homeowners of 30% to 70% in the heating mode, and 20% to 50% in the cooling mode compare to conventional systems. Well-designed residential systems exhibit positive cash flows from the first month: the incremental cost of amortizing the geothermal systems is less than the cost of the fuel or electricity not used.
A system installed correctly can last for years.

Geothermal heating and cooling uses the relatively constant temperature of the earth to heat and cool homes and businesses with 40% to 70% less energy than conventional systems. While conventional furnaces and boilers burn a fuel to generate heat, geothermal heat pumps use electricity to simply move heat from the earth into buildings, allowing much higher efficiencies. The most efficient fuel-burning heater can reach efficiencies around 95%, but a geothermal heat pump can move up to 4 units of heat for every unit of electricity needed to power the system, resulting in a practical equivalence of over 400% efficiency.

Geothermal Heat Transfer

Geo-what? We’ll explain the term so you won’t embarrass yourself in casual conversation. We drilled 426 feet down, to where the water at that level is a constant 54º. When the store coolers call for cooling we turn on the pump in the well and circulate water through the water to water units to keep the items in the coolers cold or frozen. The pump transfers the heat from all the coolers, ice making machines and disperses it into the ground surrounding the well where it is stored and tapped for heating our station in the winter. We are simply (well, maybe not so simply) moving heat around rather than creating heat by consuming more fossil fuels to regulate temperatures.
