Geothermal heating and cooling technology

Geothermal heating and cooling technology works much more efficiently than technology that uses fossil fuels. A geothermal heat pump pulls heat from the ground into homes and businesses during winter and takes hot air out of these interior spaces during summer in order to keep them cool. Since heat pumps rely on the earth’s heat, they do not require the use of coal, gas, or other fossil fuels. While they do need electricity to run, they use much less of it than central air conditioning units or furnaces. This leads to less damage to the environment, as well as lower utility payments.

Geothermal heat pumps have higher installation costs than conventional heating and cooling systems, but property owners recoup these costs over time in the form of reduced energy bills. Having one of these energy-efficient systems installed also means that property owners don’t have to worry about fluctuations in fuel costs as they would with systems that use gas or other fossil fuels. They can also save money by applying for federal tax credits for geothermal heat pump installation, which are available through the end of 2016. Some local utility companies and state or local governments also offer incentives for switching to this heating and cooling technology, which saves property owners even more money to offset the costs of installation.
