Geothermal systems

The federal government offers a tax credit for homeowners who install geothermal systems. This credit helps homeowners save 30 percent on installation costs, but they should keep in mind that this credit is only available for systems installed by the end of 2016. After that, the tax credit expires. Homeowners can also take advantage of the following financial incentives for geothermal systems:

Puget Sound Energy rebate. PSE offers $1,500 rebates for geothermal heat pumps that have Energy Star ratings, which includes WaterFurnace equipment. In order to receive this rebate, homeowners must install a brand geothermal system instead of replacing an existing one. Homeowners should note that auxiliary heating sources, such as forced air furnaces, don’t qualify for this rebate.

Snohomish PUD rebate. Snohomish PUD offers rebates of up to $2,000, plus another $500.00 for geothermal domestic hot water. In order to get this rebate, homeowners must have an Energy Star qualified heat pump installed and complete a PUD Energy Conservation Application. Snohomish PUD must also pre-approve the work before it’s done.

DSIRE. Homeowners can look for other financial incentives offered by federal, state and local governments, as well as utility companies, by using DSIRE’s online search function.
